What a proposal on a boat with us is like

Your partner thinks you're going for a sunset sail. You board at Marina Vela next to the W Hotel, or at Port Olímpic; the skipper heads out along the Barceloneta and the city slips behind you with the Sagrada Família and Torre Glòries against the sky. Forty minutes in, the boat anchors off the beach just as the sun starts to drop. Below deck the bouquet and the cava are waiting; the “deckhand” who has been helping with the sails is the photographer. You ask the question, and from there everything is ready: a toast, photos with the sunset behind you and, if you like, a three-course dinner on board or a cake for the ride back. We pick the boat from the Barcelona operators we work with, coordinate every detail with the skipper and photographer, and send you the exact meeting point — so the only thing you have to worry about is turning up on time.

Itinerary

Itinerary of a sunset proposal (2 hours)

6:30 pm — You arrive at Marina Vela, next to the W Hotel, “for a sailing trip”. The skipper welcomes you; the photographer is already on board as crew. 6:45 pm — You leave the port and sail along the Barceloneta with the city behind you. 7:30 pm — The boat anchors off Sant Sebastià or Nova Icària beach, the skipper moves to the bow and your song comes on. This is it: the question, the bouquet from below deck, the ring. 7:35 pm — Cava, photos with the sun going down and, if you ordered it, the cake or dinner on board. 8:30 pm — Back to port after dark, with Barcelona's lights on the water.

Timings follow the sun: around 9 pm in June and July, 8 pm in September, 6 pm in October and November. Winter is just as beautiful — softer light and fewer boats on the water — and sailboats are 10 % cheaper from November to March. If you prefer the morning, a 3-hour trip with a swim stop in the coves works very well for a discreet proposal in the water.

Why a boat is the best setting to propose in Barcelona

At a restaurant or a viewpoint someone is always watching; on a sailboat half a mile off the Barceloneta you are alone, with the whole city behind you and no tourists in the photo. A boat also solves the hardest part of a surprise proposal — the excuse. “A sunset sail” is a plan nobody questions, and the logistics — flowers, photographer, cava — travel hidden below deck. As an agency we compare five operators and know which one allows your own decor, which has the most photogenic deck and where the skipper has done this many times. The boat costs the same as booking direct; the operator pays our commission and the extras are quoted separately. We work in English, Spanish and Russian.

Frequently asked questions

The cheapest private sailboat is €399 for 2 hours on a weekday (€549 at weekends) and takes up to 11 people, so the price is the same for two. The most requested package — a 52-ft luxury sailboat with bouquet and photographer — comes to about €975. A catamaran with family and friends, €760 to €1,215 plus extras. These are the operators’ 2026 rates, VAT included.

Everything is agreed with you in writing, never by phone at suspicious hours. You get a believable cover story (“a sunset sail”, “a gift from a friend”) and the meeting point. The flowers and cake go on board before you; the photographer is dressed as crew and starts shooting when the skipper moves to the bow.

Sunset: the trip starts an hour and a half before sundown so the question lands in the golden light. Around 9 pm in June and July; 8 pm in September; 6 pm in October and November. Morning trips with a swim in the coves are also available.

Off Barcelona the sea is usually calm at sunset and the sailboats stay close to the beach. If your partner is prone to seasickness, we choose the catamaran: with two hulls it barely moves. The question is asked with the boat anchored, without rolling.

Yes. The sailboat takes up to 11 people and the catamarans 12 or 26. Guests board first and wait below deck, or arrive on a second boat right after the “yes”. We have done both.

If wind or sea conditions make it unsafe, the operator moves the date or refunds. If you cancel, the sailboats are free up to 48 hours before (72 if dinner is booked).

In high season — June to August and weekends in May, September and October — 2 to 4 weeks. On weekdays and in winter boats are available with a few days’ notice; the photographer is what sells out first.

Of course. They board as a guest or as crew. If you don’t have one, the operator’s photographer costs €300 for the whole trip, or we suggest one of the proposal photographers we work with in Barcelona.

Yes. A three-course dinner for €75 per person, tapas for €35, an Ibérico ham board for €120, a cake from €55. Or you step off the boat and continue with dinner at a seafront restaurant or a terrace in the Born, booked by us.
